Falling wages in Japan

Japan's wage levels have been declining for many years.

According to government published materials in April 2025, from 1991 to 2023, the trend in wages per person in Japan will remain at 1.02 times. It is lagging far behind the US and the UK.

This situation is leading to a decline in workers’ purchasing power and quality of life, and is acting as a hindrance to economic growth.

The government has set a goal of raising the national average minimum wage to 1,500 yen by the mid-2030s.

To raise wages, the government is promoting support for improving skills through "re-skilling," which allows workers to move to higher-paying jobs.

I think wages are an interesting topic for college students who work part-time to earn money for hobbies and living expenses.

Raising the minimum wage will also lead to increased consumption and revitalization of the economy. However, rising labor costs could put pressure on small and medium-sized businesses.

In recent years, I have noticed an increase in prices whether I shop at the supermarket or go to a restaurant.

I would like the minimum wage to be raised in line with the price rise.

  2. In addition to the fact that Japan has a low minimum wage compared to other countries, I think the disparity between the fact that the minimum wage is lower in rural areas than in urban areas should also be eliminated.

  3. For a college student like me who lives alone, the rise in prices of everyday items at supermarkets is a big deal.
